What is Qurbani/Udhiyah?

Qurbani means sacrifice. It is the act of sacrificing an animal for Eid al-Adha.  It is implemented as an expression of gratefulness towards Allah Ta’la, and to provide for the less fortunate.

Traditionally, the Muslims sacrifice a goat, sheep, cow or camel. Meat is often shared with neighbors, families and the poor.

Quran & Sunnah pertaining to Qurbani/Udhiyah

Quran on Qurbani:

“And complete the Hajj and ‘umrah for Allah . But if you are prevented, then [offer] what can be obtained with ease of sacrificial animals. And do not shave your heads until the sacrificial animal has reached its place of slaughter. And whoever among you is ill or has an ailment of the head [making shaving necessary must offer] a ransom of fasting [three days] or charity or sacrifice. And when you are secure, then whoever performs ‘umrah [during the Hajj months] followed by Hajj [offers] what can be obtained with ease of sacrificial animals. And whoever cannot find [or afford such an animal] – then a fast of three days during Hajj and of seven when you have returned [home]. Those are ten complete [days]. This is for those whose family is not in the area of al-Masjid al-Haram. And fear Allah and know that Allah is severe in penalty.

(Al-Baqara, Verse – 196)

“It is neither their flesh nor their blood that reaches Allah; it is your piety that reaches Him.”
(Al-Hajj, Verse – 37)

Hadith related to Qurbani:

The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) said: “The people of each household should offer an sacrifice every year”
(Transmitted by Ahmad, 20207. Al-Haafiz Ibn Hajar said in Fathul-Bari: ‘Its isnaad is strong.’)

Significance of Qurbani

Qurbani has been performed from the time of Ibrahim (peace be upon him) and commemorates his willingness to sacrifice his son, who was replaced by an animal at the time of sacrifice.

Ismail (peace be upon him), son of Ibrahim (peace be upon him) was reprieved when Ibrahim (peace be upon him) proved he would sacrifice his own son as an act of piety, despite the pain it would have caused him as a father. This practice of sacrifice that is performed every year during Eid Al Adha acts as a reminder to everyone of Ibrahim’s obedience to Allah Ta’la.
